Ichisan - Full Bet EP
AIR040

Its time for the second Airtight release from Slovenian based Ichisan (AKA Igor Skafar). After some fine releases on the Eskimo and Solardisco labels our man is back. The cunningly titled 'Full Bet' EPs brings us a fine remix from his last offering on Airtight as well as two new quality laden tracks.

First up is the EPs lead track 'Full Bet Rule'. Big rolling chunky synths, tight 4/4 underbeats, and darting Herbie Hancock like synth lead lines.

'Numbers' takes things into groovier territory. Some percussive Bernard Edwards style bass & handclaps anchor the 70's grooves whilst the punchy clavinet 80's synth lines drive this melodic disco stomper.

To round off the package (mainly because due to the enormous length of the mix it needed a whole side of the vinyl to itself) is the Bjorn Torske remix of Global Pillage. Here the original is given a scandanavian nu-disco polish and shine.

Stay tuned with more to come from Igor and Airtight.

Airtight In Session: Volume 1
AIR039

Having begun life as the sub label for 90’s institution Hooj, Airtight has spent 10 years quietly putting out quality deep house, bits of proto – nu disco, and the odd club classic.

The label’s output has always been a touch sporadic, which explains why this is in fact the first compilation after a decade, but hopefully the depth and breadth of music on offer here gives a decent insight into the standards the label has maintained throughout .

There are four unreleased tracks exclusive to the album, starting off with an epic Balearic re- rub of Ichisans "Global Pillage" from Scandinavian founding father Bjorn Tjorske, a mesmeric slab of deep tackle from new-comer Tony Underground that to these ears sounds like it’s crossing oriental harmonies with Afro flavours, and then one from Japanese producer Atsushi Yano, "Act Safari" a jazzy laidback , percussion and Rhodes affair .

Out of the vaults come some timeless pieces – Francois Kevorkians gorgeous mix of Ame Strongs’ French Language "Tout Est Blue" that opened the Airtight account back in 1998 is followed by the spacey vocal cut "Risky Trains" from Belgiums’ Raft.

Ilya Santana’s sparse, electronic disco from 2004 gets an airing with the sumptuous "Occidental Accidental", and Peace Division Clive Henry and Justin Drake add bump and depth to F + L "Love Capsule Deluxe" in their Soul Purpose Guise. Dirty Haze’s NY funk reworking of Mental Grooves’ "Run to the Hills" to round things off.

Airtight In Session Volume 1: Sampler
AIR038

Having begun life as the sub label for 90’s institution Hooj, Airtight has spent 11 years quietly putting out quality deep house, bits of proto – nu disco, and the odd club classic.

The label’s output has always been a touch sporadic, which explains why this is the vinyl sampler from the first compilation after a decade, but hopefully the depth and breadth of music on offer on the comp, and hinted at here, gives a decent insight into the standards the label has maintained throughout .

Things open up as they did back in the 90’s with Francois Kevorkians gorgeous mix of Ame Strongs’ French Language ‘ Tout Est Blue’. Next up is a new one from Japanese producer Atsushi Yano, “Room Safari” is a rolling, hypnotic and tough jazzy houser, somewhere between Jeff Mills and Restless Souls.

The flipside opens with a mesmeric slab of deep tackle from new-comer Tony Underground, that to these ears sounds like it’s crossing oriental harmonies with Afro flavours. Things finally round off with possibly the best-selling mix of one our favourite tunes; The organic psychedelics are once again giving an airing with Justin Martins mix of “Mushrooms” from Marshall Jefferson and the Noosa Heads.

The Airtight back catalog is now available through all digital stores and a “warehouse find” load of vinyl from distributor Backs / Shellshock.

Snorkel - As The Dust Settles
AIR037

Snorkel were formed ten years ago by multi–instrumentalist Frank Byng, and have quietly but determinedly trodden the path of Kraut and Free Jazz inspired improvisation ever since, with their residency at the Adelaide pub in North London the stuff of legends, and their recent album on the Slowfoot label, Glass Darkly warmly received by everyone from Pitchfork to Boomkat.

Here, the opening track of the album appears on the longstanding Airtight label in an extended and remastered form, 8mins of organic hypno-funk that could have come straightoutta Dusseldorf in 74’, with mantra chants, tape effects and loose rhythms swirling around the raw groove to create something fit for headphones and more adventurous dancefloors alike.

On the flipside, Italian space commandoes the Diaphanoids take to the controls and conjure up a slo-mo disco-kosmiche chugger, complete with laser driven riffs and a fat, chugging bassline.

Definitely one for the heads, but as the tempos slow down and the genre boundaries continue to blur, there’s something here for disco freaks, kosmic kommandoes and Kraut heads alike.
